Collateral Damage

July 27th, 2007

I once asked
if anybody would care.
A few did.  Many (too many) did not.

They wanted, instead, to struggle against some old tide,
nurture some old grudge,
or grind their heels into the hard rock of hatred

others wanted to get on the circuit,
and ride in the chauffered limousine,

create an endless tragic fairytale
where they could hide from reality
and lie to, or about, the world

They wanted: their turn as victim.

They wanted to cozy up to the disease, wallow in it,
feel the bright lights of pity

They wanted to carve great round moons
of romance around the ugly truth,
and cut deep-ringed wounds into
those precious few who cared.

They wanted to be owed something,
but it wasn’t the right thing,
and it wasn’t from the right people.

They wanted to hate, and they did.
And they wanted to spread their seed of hate
far & wide.

They wanted: rumors, gossip, rage,
lies, deception –an army of like-minded haters
who would wrap their false arms around them

and tell them no truths
believing only the invented.

They wanted everything, it seems

Except justice.

Sad. And a waste

of years.

Soon

(10. . .15. . .20. . .)

No one will remember the truth

and no will be left to care.
